Hosts and hostesses want to ensure that they can not serve food, the guests had an allergic reaction and when dealing with different cultures, they want to ensure that food is not offensive. For example, you would not serve pork at a meal, where some of your guests practiced the Muslim religion. You would not roast beef or chicken, if you know some of your guests are vegetarians.
